In the US, there is covert racism...for the most part.
In Japan, there is overt racism...for the most part.
(Everything is the opposite here.)
I can deal with the latter a lot more easily than the former because I prefer to know what someone (or a society) thinks of me right from the get-go.
Many places that deal with...sensitive...services prefer to just bar all non-Japanese from entering an establishment rather than risk having grave misunderstandings over a ...sensitive...topic get out of hand. For example - hostess clubs. Generally speaking, hostess clubs will only allow Japanese to enter because the entire thing revolves around...well..talking and also probably because the owners don't want uncouth gaijin making their regulars unhappy with bad manners, cultural differences and social blunders. But I left the bank with money in hand and was walking by one and had to fight the guy off with a stick, he wanted me to come in so badly.
Money talks, bullshit walks, i guess.
But these business owners have nothing to worry about since racism is not something that is really punished.
Hey, if your country was 98% homogeneous, would you care?

I almost (note: I said 'almost') respect obvious and unsubtle racism and xenophobia.
